Now look at and do a few warmup exercises. These will prepare you for subsequent lessons, when we really get into detail about possessives - possessive forms of nouns, pronouns, and adjectives.

Warm-up 1

My father's three sisters and their children also came to my grandparents' house.

The bold words in the sentence above are all possessives.  On the lines provided below, indicate if each form is a possessive adjective, a possessive noun, or a possessive pronoun.   Then write what the object of possession is.  Be careful!

1. In my native country a lot of children's parents don't know how to read or write.  For
        S            S
example, this writer's father didn't know how to read or write, and his son was ashamed of him.  I think that the writer should not have been embarrassed by his father's inability to read or write.

2.  One of my favorite portraits is that of Juan de Pareja, and was painted by Diego de Velazques.  Juan was a slave, but in this portrait Juan looks like a king.  He's wearing a black suit with a beautiful white collar.  He has a beautifl dark face with big black eyes and eyebrows.  His hair is curly and black.  His beard and mustache are becoming to his face.  He looks proud.
