Verbs:  Nonprogressive Verbs

We contiue our discussion of verb forms, verb tenses, and time references.

Today's audio lesson follows our lesson, "Progressive Verbs".  In this lesson you can listen to and repeat sentences written by other learners of English that use non-progressive verbs.

Which Verbs are NOT Commonly Used in the Progressive Tenses? 

See the chart below. The verbs in blue are used in the sentences below.

Clauses Indicating:  
Verbs of Perception and Sense: feel, hear*, see*, feel*, taste*
Verbs of Cognition and Mental Processes: believe, doubt, know, look*, realize, remember, think*, want, wish, understand, etc.
Verbs of Emotion: like, dislike, hate, love, feel, miss, care, etc.
Other: appear, be*, consist of, cost, deserve, equal, have*, need, require, need, seem, belong to, consist of, cost, etc.
*  These verbs can be used in the progressive tenses but in the progressive tenses their meaning is different.

I think that everybody waits for Friday night because this is the last day of the week.

I believe that God helps people who help themselves.
