Gerunds and Infinitives:  As Object of the Verb

Welcome to PART 2 of our discussion of GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES: As Object of the Verb.

Before you begin the activities, you may want to read, study and do the exercises for Gerunds and Infinitives as object of the verb, Part 1.

 

What's wrong with this sentence?

Problem: My parents want leave Kazakhstan and live with us in Russia.

Pattern 1 (Part 1):  Verb + Infinitive Phrase

I want to do it my way.
verb + infinitive phrase
want     +    to do

Notice that in the above sentence, "to do" is the object of the verb.  It answers the question "want what?"  Can you see that the infinitive phrase "to do" functions as a noun?

Examples

In each of the examples below, notice that:

1) the main verb (which is underlined) is in the list from the previous lesson, Part 1, and

2) the object of the verb is an infinitive phrase

1. They want to play with their friends.

2. They don't want to study.

3. Parents need to be their children's friend.

4. I chose to do it my way.

5. People have to remember many important things.
