Adjectives in Noun Phrases
We normally think of a common noun as one word such as friend, home, computer, beauty, news, and swimming. A noun can, however, and often does consist of more than one word. This is called a noun phrase.
Very often a noun phrase will contain
an adjective such as a descriptive
adjective, a demonstrative adjective,
or a
possessive adjective.
-
An example of a noun phrase that contains a descriptive adjective is the Black Sea.
-
If there is a possessive adjective or a demonstrative adjective in the noun phrase, do not use an article (a, an, the) before the possessive or descriptive adjective. Examples of such noun phrases are my new computer, our home, and this letter.
type of adjective | noun phrase |
descriptive | the Black Sea |
a possessive adjective | |
my new computer | |
demonstrative | this letter |
